How to Find the Best SMPS for your PC
When we a buy a new computer the first thing most of the people ignore is a smps or powersupply. This is a very common mistake made by them and they usually settle for the default power supply that comes bundled with the computer cabinet or casing thus compromising on quality,performance and stability. They can work normally but can fall under heavy load and voltage fluctuations. So if you want your computer to function properly and want performance and stability under heavy load then you have to go and purchase a separate branded smps. Also it can fulfill your needs to have a middle range graphics card on your system to play games as well. The Power Supply forms the one of the most important part of your computer.

What is a Power Supply or SMPS?
A SMPS (Switched-Mode Power Supply) or Computer PSU (Power Supply Unit) is a unit of your computer that supply power or electricity to all your components on your computer. It is designed to supply proper voltages and current that is needed by various devices like cpu, motherboard, hard disk, optical drive, graphics card or any other pc component.
How to choose a good SMPS ?
First thing is that do not get fooled by the SMPS Watt rating. This a very common mistake done by the people. A good 300 Watt smps can easily beat a cheap local branded 500 / 600 Watt SMPS. The very first thing that you should look for in a SMPS is the 12 volt amperage reading. There is a voltage /current chart printed on every smps, on that chart look for the current/amp below 12 volt reading and make sure it is at least 30 amp [if it is a dual rail smps then the each rail i.e. V1 and V2 both should have at least 16A to 18A current on it individually]. If it is above 30 amp then it can be considered as a good smps for a system with basic configuration. If you want a SMPS for gaming then the Current on 12V Rail should be more than 35A.
12v rail is responsible for providing power to the major components in the computer i.e processor, motherboard, graphics card, hard disks. So greater the current rating of 12v rail the efficiency and stability is bound to be good. High end SMPS’s have either single or multiple 12v rail and have more than 40 amp current on it. So it is the most important factor when you buy a SMPS. Besides this you can also look for the smps weight, by feeling it in your hand, heavier the smps the better heatsink it will have, means a better cooling and more stability under heavy load.

First thing i would advise you is to remove that Intex smps and get yourself Corsair VS450 SMPS. Secondly i want to know from which fan the noise is coming, Is it cpu fan, smps fan, cabinet fan or graphics card fan (if you have) ?
even CPU fan run fast and make noise & SMPS fan also makes noise, when applications are opened CPU fan runs 4000 to 5000 rpm & even more some times, wat is the solution to make noise less. not using any cabinet fan
First of all change your SMPS to the one that i have recommended you and also monitor your CPU fan RPM speed and tell me. Use Hardware Info (HWiNFO) to monitor the rpm speed of cpu fan.

I have a desktop with two hard disk one is of 2TB hard disk Toshiba and another is of 320 GB OS is installed in it, 4 GB RAM Kingston, i3 processor, ASUS motherboard is installed.

Go for Corsair Power Supply 450 watts VS450. It will cost you at around $45. The noise is in the SMPS is because of Fan. Cheap SMPS have low quality equipments fitted in them. In your case the Fan is at fault and anytime it can stop rotating and may cause some damage to your motherboard or any of its components.

The sudden switching of your PC could be due to faulty or cheap SMPS. iball smps are never good. they just buy Chinese made cheap smps and put their stickers on it. Always look for top brands like Antec, Coolermaste,VIP, Tagan and Corsair when buying a SMPS as it is the most important unit of tour PC. Good brands will cost you more but they will offer you good performance and peace of mind. A local branded smps from companies like iball, intext,frontec,zebronics should be avoided at all times. Corsair is better than CoolerMaster. I would suggest you to go for Corsair VS550 550 Watt SMPS. It will cost you around 3 – 3.5k and also please get rid of that Frontech SMPS as soon as possible.

I would recommend a 500 – 600 watt smps for you. You can go for VIP 500/600 Watts or Cooler Master 600 Watts extreme Power Plus SMPS or FSP SAGA II 500W smps. If you can spend more then you can have a shot at Tagan or Corsair 500/600 watt SMPS.

Yes Cooler Master is good brand for cabinets but they are a bit expensive. iBall cabinets are equally as good and they are very cost effective. There is cabinet in iball called iball Tower which a very good cabinet. It is very spacious so your PC components can breath easily. For SMPS cooler master and corsair are good brands. You can also have a look at VIP SMPS which are also very good and value for money SMPS. You can get yourself a 500/600 Watt smps from these brands which will enough for your configuration. For cabinet you can look at the iball range as they have good range and are very affordable. iball tower is a very good cabinet as it has plenty of space in it. for smps you can go for the VIP 500/600 watt smps or Cooler Master Thunder 450W SMPS. The smps will cost you under 3000 Rs and the cabinet will cost you around 1500 Rs. If you have more queries then feel free to ask me.

Corsair 650 W is good smps and can easily take the load of your system even if you are planning to buy a good graphics card. for cabinet you can go for anyone of your choice keeping only one pint in mind that it should be spacious and have proper airflow and should have space for installing more fans for cooling.

i would not recommend any smps from i-ball. they are not of good quality and their ampere ratings are too low even for a 60 watt iball smps. better go for comapnies like VIP, coolermaster, corsair or even gigabyte.

Zotac is a good company for Graphics Card. For Graphics card you can go for GTX650 which is enough to play the games you have listed , but on medium settings. The card will cost you at Rs. 7800/- mark. For SMPS get a 500 – 600 Watts SMPS from VIP or Cooler Master. In you have any more queries then feel free to ask.

SMPS has nothing to do with motherboard compatibility. Maybe the SMPS you bought might be the faulty one. Check the smps on your friend’s pc and see that if it is working or not. For motherboard you can go for ASUS P8H61-M LX or Gigabyte H61M-HD2. They will cost you around Rs. 3200 approx. Feel free to ask if you have any more queries.

450W or 500 Watt will be more than enough for you..600 watt is an overkill but the gigabyte smps that i have told you is in the price range of 500 W smps and there is not much difference between 450W and 500 W smps, so i would suggest you to go for 500 watt smps but from good brands like Cooler Master, VIP, Corsair, Gigabyte. Avoid SMPS from local brands like intex, frontech,iball, zebronics etc..

1. What harm it could do to my pc as power is not the issue?

Zebronics is not a good smps brand but in your case it can do your job as you have a very basic system. Zebronics 450W gold smps has 16 Amp on 12Volt rail which is average. If you have huge voltage fluctuation in your are then it is must to have a UPS to avoid any damage to your SMPS, Motherboard or any other components. I would suggest a 600VA UPS from APC or iBall. APC will cost a little more but it worth the extra money. If you have any more queries, feel free to ask.

Antec is a very good brand and it is better than Cooler master but equal to Corsair. Antec cabinets and SMPS are of very high quality but they are difficult to find in India. 450W is enough for your PC but if want a bit bigger for future then you can also get Corsair VS550.

Better to use a single 2TB HDD as two 1TB hard disks will consume more power and put load on your SMPS. Also you cannot run your new PC from the OS loaded in your older hard disk. You have to clean install windows.

Your motherboard has nothing to do with card ram. Graphics Card has inbuilt memory and it has no connection to do with your board RAM. It manages its RAM itself. you can even install a DDR5 graphics card on your board. my advice is to go for the card i suggested you.

Now, I have an 8 yr old PC… P4 2.6GHz, 2GB RAM, 160GB IDE hard disk, Intel D845GVSR motherboard with inbuilt Graphics chip…… I had a APC UPS but unfortunately the battery died 2 yrs back…. since then I am using without the UPS… now my pC restarts very frequently even for the slightest fluctuations in power…. As I use my PC for downloading stuff, I feel this very frustrating… I feel that the SMPS is 2 b blamed as the PC tries to start but keeps switching off, also the moment I switch on any other device in my room, the PC restarts…. 2. Graphics Card (Ati radeon? which power of ATI radeon)

For Cabinet i would advice you to go for Cooler Master Cosmos SE Full Tower Cabinet. It is a big big cabinet but a bit on expensive side but it is the exactly the thing you asked for. It will cost you at around 16k.
For Graphics Card save money and go for nvidia. As you are not into gaming you should be fine with a lower-mid range graphics card like Zotac 2GB GT630 and it will cost you at around Rs. 5800/-
Yes you can go for 12 GB of RAM if you are running a 64-bit OS. For RAM Corsair is the best brand to look for.
For External HDD i would suggest Western Digital but toshiba is also good.
For SMPS i would advice two models, Corsair CMPSU-650TX 650 Watts and Seasonic S12II 620 Watts. Corsair and Seasonic SMPS are far better than CoolerMaster if money is not an issue.

I have an iball 450W SMPS.. was working well since a year..
But, recently my system stared shutting down abruptly.. twice or thrice in a week…
Later recently, the system was screwed completely….not able to boot at all and going into infinite loop of reboots even before the bios itself…
Removed a ram from a slot and was able to boot it somehow…
But, Audio has gone out of the system….There is no sound now..Neither speakers nor System boot Beep…
I think the motherboard got damaged in certain areas…..
So was thinking of buying a new motherboard DH77EB
And a good SMPS like Corsair VS450 450 Watt
But, i have read in places that SMPS with PFC doesnt go well with Modified Sine Wave UPS… Is it ture…is it something i need to worry about ??

i would advice you to get Cooler Master Thunder 450W SMPS. It will cost you around Rs. 2600/- but will serve you very well even if you upgrade your pc.

Hi Mr. Akshat verma- My Specs are: Core i3; DH64 mobo, 4GB Transcend DDR3 RAM; Nvidia GT 210; Hytech 450W (Local) PSU. Im likely to upgrade medium range graphics card, so i chose AMD’s new model R7 240 DDR5 (1GB) card. But i was warned my gamer friend as this card needs a good PSU to handle sufficient supply. I was hardly managed to get money for Gpu. But i cant even make one single buck more for Psu. So i have left only 2 options:
1) Should i go down with low power consuming gpu. (like Gt 630, AMD 6450)
2) To upgrade PSU (Zebronics 500W platinum) is ok?

My budget is max. 6k for only graphics card.
AMD R7 240 DDR5 is not a power hungry card so you should be fine with your basic 450W smps. In future when you have budget for SMPS try to get a VIP 500W, Cooler Master Thunder 450W or Corsair VS450 450 Watt SMPS. They are not too expensive but your PC will be in good health and will be able to handle load even if you updrade or add any new component.

unfortunately there is no good smps under 2k. you have to spend at least 3 – 3.5k for a good 500W smps. In future try to get Corsair VS450 450 Watt SMPS which has same performance of a good 500W smps and it will cost u around 2.2 – 2.5k.

During last monsoon, my motherboard was damaged. Though nothing happened to SMPS. Didn’t have UPS then.
What do you suggest for SMPS now? Is Corsair VS450 good enough for above requirement?
Should I replace Gigabyte H61 MoBo with Asus H61 LX-2 Mobo? Or can you please suggest a good mother-board for above configuration?
With Gigabyte, am not getting the kind of performance one would expect with i7. Using Windows 7 Ultimate.

Corsair VS450 will be enough for you even if you plan to get a graphics card in near future. In motherboard department Asus do have an extra edge over Gigabyte so you can try replacing it. You have pretty god configuration but a crappy SMPS, I suggest you to change it as soon as possible with Corsair one. you can also expect a performance increase with a good smps. if you have any more doubts pls ask..

About 2 months ago I had contacted you regarding the SMPS…. you did mention that the Cooler Master Elite Power 350W would suffice for my system…. though it is available, the problem lies with the position of the fan, my earlier smps had the fan towards the back, but the Cooler Master Elite Power 350W has it at the top….. any suggestions … I even thought about Corsair VS350 as the input is 200-240V whereas Cooler Master is 220-240V, as the power in my home is on the lower side…. what do you suggest, also is Huntkey a good one…. I also considered Corsair CX430 as it has a 4-pin cpu connector (mine’s Pentium4) and efficiency is 80% whereas Cooler Master is 70%, but again the fan is @ the top…. please help.

The Fan you are referring to is actually comes in the bottom and not the top of the cabinet. All new performance SMPS have the same design i.e bigger fan at the bottom. When you assemble it on your cabinet you will not face any issue. Also Corsair SMPS is better than the cooler master one so you can go for Corsair if you have no budget issues. Huntkey is also nice but i suggest you to go for Corsair.

I read the Corsair manual and it says that the P4 connector is not there…. earlier I thought that the 24 pin motherboard connector could be split to 20+4 pin and the 4 pin could be used as P4 connector, but the manual has cautioned not to do it…. , I just want to go for CX-430 as it has great specs, but what can I do for the P4 connector???

I read the Corsair manual & it says that the 24pin Motherboard connector can be split as a 20+4 pin but cant use the 4 pin as a P4 connector, they specifically say that it is not meant for P4 +12V connections , whereas my motherboard manual says that the 4 pin connector is +12V…. please help, my Motherboard is an Intel D845GVSR

Thank you Akshat. I bought it Corsair VS450 via online snapdeal (due to less price as compared to shops). Couriered from New Delhi. But doubt about its warranty as no service-center in India. I had some connection plugin issue during assemble so i called up toll free number 1800-425-54-64, but no response. Snapdeal guys straight away said we don’t guarantee directly products from USA. Now its working fine. But. just a bit fear, hope its good for long run.

Initially when i bought the computer, it has been supplied with iball 450 W SMPS (2 years back), it has got burnt a year back, then bought the Zebronics 450W SMPS fitted it, to my surprise green light on motherboard was on but i cannot switch on the computer, the same smps when i fitted to other computer it was working fine, i changed it to Intex 450W SMPS same issue (green light is on in motherboard but can’t switch on the computer, but same SMPS works gud in other CPU’s), then changed it to SUPERCOMP 450W SMPS which worked fine…(this was almost year back). Now the FAN of SUPERCOMP SMPS is not working due to which the SMPS is heating up and computer is switching off (not frequently but sometimes).
Now trying to replace the SMPS…….but tried with the INTEX,ZEBRONICS,…etc, the green light is on in the motherboard but not able to switch on the computer, where as when i re-fit the old SUPERCOMP SMPS (fan not working) im able to switch on the computer………..Im not able to understand what is happening….. can you please suggest some solution……which SMPS would make me to switch on my computer……
I am sorry to say but you are using very low quality SMPS (i.e Zebronics, Intex etc.). I would suggest you to go for Corsair VS450 or VIP 500 Watt SMPS to keep your PC / Components in good condition.

I think there is some problem with your motherboard. Get your mobo get checked or replaced.
i have pentium d , 2.8 ghz (p4), 2 gb ddr ram,80 gb+ 500 gb(sata) hdd, 19 inch lcd monitor,. the smps reads input 220 v 4A ,50HZ, OUTPUT 220V 1.5A , 50HZ
APC UPS: 230 v 600va ,360w. but the ups get overloaded after use of a few hours and changes to battery mode. kindly give me the solution.
Please check with another UPS and report me.
on making complaint to apc, they have replaced the ups with a new one. but the problem still exist, unable to understand. is it a case of overloading but no warning on ups of overloading.
try it with another ups besides apc from your friend’s computer and tell me if the problem still persist

I suggest you to go for Cooler Master Elite Power 350W SMPS. It has got dual 12V rails and 28A current on 12V rails (total), so even if you install a low-mid range graphics card then also this smps will be sufficient enough. It will cost you at around Rs. 1800/-.

Cooler Master Thunder 500W will cost you Rs. 1000/- more without any additional benefit and it has 35A on 12V rail which is 1A less than Antec VP450P which has 36A. So my advice is to get Antec VP450P SMPS only.

The primary thing that matters is the 12V rail current which is 36A for Antec VP450P and 35A for Cooler Master Thunder 500W. Clearly Antech SMPS is the winner here and offers more performance. You can read this thing in mu post. Then comes the Wattage which is used to attract people who do not have much technical knowledge. You will more than fine with Antec VP450P SMPS even if you upgrade to a more powerful graphics card.

Zebronics SMPS are crap and they cannot take the load of modern pc and graphics cards. i think it is the issue with burned out smps. please do not buy and use zebronics smps and buy the one that i have advised you. if you have more queries then feel free to ask.

Most probably the problem is with your zebronics smps. Zebronics 450W smps has only 16A current on 12V rail which is not sufficient for a PC with Graphics card or without it also. I would recommend you to get a better smps or psu like Corsair VS450 450W or Antec VP450P I 450 Watts.

For cabinet i would say Cooler Master Elite 311. It will cost you at around Rs. 2500/-. Iball also have some very good cabinets that i think are very good and cheap. You can look at the complete iball cabinet range at http://www.iball.co.in and they will cost you Rs. 2400/- maximum. For smps i recommend Corsair VS550 550 Watt SMPS. VIP 585 cabinet is good and there is no need to go for more expensive Cooler Master Elite 311/344 cabinets unless you are into hardcore gaming. For Wi-Fi card I would suggest D-Link DWA-525 Wireless N 150 Desktop Adapter. TP link wi-fi card will also work with your motherboard and router, because there are no such restrictions imposed on motherboards, routers etc. unless stated specifically on the device. VIP brand can only be found in Pune, Bombay region as they are not common across India, but their SMPS are of top quality. I have seen their SMPS on ebay sometimes. If you cannot find VIP SMPS then you should look for Corsair VS450 450 Watt SMPS or Cooler Master Thunder 450W SMPS. Both SMPS will be at around Rs. 2500/- mark. i have core 2 quad Q8200 & ASROCK G41m VS3 motherboard with 6GB (2GB+4GB) of ddr3 ram, 500 GB Toshiba sata II hard disk and sapphire R7 250 1GB ddr5 graphic card. I also have TP-Link 150 mbps Wi-Fi card on 32 bit PCI slot and 1 16x dvd writer. & i also have 1Tb SEAGATE external hard drive which is always plugged in. My CPU & GPU both get very hot. GPU goes to 89-90 degree and CPU goes to 99 degree (all 4 core) while gaming. And while internet surfing CPU goes to 67-70 degree. I Currently have 450 watt Frontech PSU . can u tell me that is high temp problems because of PSU or does my motherboard cannot run a quad core processor properly? Also Suggest me a good CPU cooler in low price???
You have such good configuration but a crappy SMPS. You are very fortunate that you have not suffered any damage of components by using Frontech 450W PSU. I advise you to remove this Frontech SMPS as soon as possible and get yourself Corsair VS550 SMPS. It will cost you at around 3k Rs. You motherboard is OK and can run Quad core properly. Replace your SMPS with one that i have mentioned and get back to me again with the observations.

For 350 Watt SMPS i would say Corsair VS350 but my solid recommendation would be Corsair VS450. Corsair VS450 is a 450 Watt SMPS and the price difference between the two is only of Rs. 300/-. Corsair VS350 is priced at Rs. 2000/- and Corsair VS450 at Rs. 2300/-. So my advise is to get Corsair VS450 if possible as it a rock solid SMPS and you can run your server 24 hours a day without any problems.

Gigabyte h97d3h is a powerful full ATX motherboard and here i advice you to go for Corsair VS550 as it will more future proof if you are planning to use a mid-range graphics card. For UPS just change the battery as there is no need to buy a new UPS.

Cooler Master Thunder 500W is also a very good SMPS and you can safely go for it without any second thought. It has total of 45A (24A + 21A) on 12V rail.

I got this power supply in cheap price with combo offer . SO is it enough or I have to change power supply ?
All looks good except the power supply. Circle power supplies are not good and you will risk your components by using this circle smps, so get yourself a Corsair VS550 PSU for this configuration.

Mine is a i7 processor, 2tb hard disk, 2gb graphics card, 4gb × 2 DDR ram, and i had a cooler master 350w smps which crashed down a week back.. due to unstable current supply and i dont have a ups too. the person who assembled the system said the smps has to be replaced.. he says the cost of the same smps is 3600 if bought new.. i feel its very costly 🙁 is there any other reasonable alternative for my configuration? Does an cooler master cost that high??
And is a ups compulsary to avoid smps failure? If yes please suggest a good ups also for me At a reasonable price.. !

Cooler Master 350W cost around Rs. 1700- 1800/-. The person who assembled your system is cheating you. I advice you to get Corsair VS450 PSU.
Also UPS is not compulsory and is not responsible for smps failure but it is always good to have a UPS for additional protection of your components. For UPS i advice you to go for APC Back UPS BX600CI-IN 600VA. It will you at around Rs. 2100/-.

I do not recommend Zebronics 450W at all because it is a very poor smps. I advice you to get Corsair VS450. It will cost you about Rs. 2200/- but it is worth the price and gives you the required performance. Quality branded SMPS may cost a bit high at once but in the long run you will recover its cost.

I have 4GB + 4GB DDR3 RAM, Core 2 Duo processor and Zotac NVDIA GEFORCE GT 610 (which now I have removed to release stress to my SMPS). I would like to upgrade my system to Core i7 in future. I would say Corsair VS450 or Cooler Master Thunder 450W SMPS. They will cost you under Rs. 2.5k.
Which one will be better? Consair has 1 12V rail (34A) and 4 SATA cables while Cooler Master has 2 12V rail (39A in total). Which one would you recommend?
Both are good and it really depends on your choice. I should say Corsair has a bit edge as single 12V Rail SMPS can bear more load at once but in multiple 12V rail smps the current on each rail is less as compared to a single 12V rail smps, so if one rail is stressed out more by the graphics card or any other component then the smps may crash. In multiple rails smps each rail runs on its own and their no load sharing as you can see in multiple core processors.

I just checked my current SMPS’s specs. I have a COLOURS cabinet and default SMPS it is 450 watt double rail (18+19)A…. This is the one I’ve been using since the beginning. Do you think this is a good SMPS or should I switch to Consair? What I meant was – Is the bad sectors of my hard drive due to SMPS or there might be some other problem non-related to SMPS (I assumed the problem might be SMPS because the Hard Disk health stayed at 14% after I removed the Graphics Card)… Sorry to bother you like this but I would really like your opinion…
Never heard the name of the cabinet and smps before. It is always good to go for a good branded smps for better performance, efficiency and safety of your components. I recommend that you should change your SMPS to Corsair one to be on the safer side.

After using my PC for 3+ years, I came to realize that I’ve been using a local brand SMPS (Priya 500W). After upgrading my RAM (also Storage capacity), there is no much improvement. I’m now planning to change my SMPS, but can’t decide which one to go for, and I’ll truly appreciate your advice in this matter.
Presently, my basic system configuration is : MSi H55M-E21 Motherboard, Intel Core i3, 6GB RAM (4+2 DDR3), 500GB + 1TB Seagates, Window 7 (Ultimate) 64bit. I AM NOW PLANNING TO USE M-AUDIO M-TRACK PLUS [for making home recording]. This Audio-Interface requires Phantom Power Supply (48+v). A part from music studio, I also use to do Photoshop & Video editing (rarely). NO TO GAMING! Can you please suggest me any particular SMPS(s) that will serve my system requirements. I would advise you to get either Corsair VS450 or Antec VP450P. Both are 450 Watt SMPS and offers very good performance. They will cost you under Rs. 3k.

One more doubt… my present SMPS is 500W already (though its local brand!) and due to Phantom power supply requirement for my upcoming M-Audio Interface device (also Condenser microphone, which will be connected to the Audio Interface device – From USA), I was/am thinking to go for at least 500 or 650 W of branded SMPS (Cosair or Thunder). Will it be o.k or just waste of power/money? Will 450W still be o.k?
Also any suggestions for supplementary graphic card?

I would say a branded 450 Watt SMPS will be OK but if you want to be more future proof or planning to add more hardware then you should get Corsair VS550 for extra 700 Rs. Corsair VS550 will cost you at Rs. 3000/- but you will be more future proof. For graphics card i recommend Zotac GT630 2GB DDR3. It is not a mid range or high end gaming card because you said that you are not into gaming. It is very good entry level card and will definitely help you in your video editing or recording work and software like Photoshop etc. This card will cost you under 5k.

There are no good SMPS in Rs. 1000/- range. For a good SMPS you will have to spend Rs. 2000 – 2500/-. A cabinet should have proper airflow, vents and required space for fans for better functioning and cooling of your components. SMPS and PSU are the same thing. For SMPS i would suggest you to go for Corsair VS450 for Rs. 2200/-.

You can use a normal basic cabinet if it is spacious and have good room for airflow. It is not necessary but it is good to use one intake fan (front-bottom of cabinet) and one exhaust fan (at the rear) for proper airflow. If your computer hardware components (mobo, cpu etc.) temperature is in the safe range and you do not have a graphics card then you may avoid the extra fans.

Hi my friend earlier had dual core processor and gt610 gpu. Before 4 days he upgraded his processor to i3 and changed mobo and also the graphic card to r7 250x. Till 2 days his pc was running fine using intex classic450 psu of around 250w. Now yesterday he replaced his psu with Circle 500w. Now the problem is that he can use his pc normally while browsing internet for a whole day but as soon as he starts playing game, pc automatically restarts without giving BSOD. This kèps on happening regularly. He has also formatted his harddisk but the problem still persist.
Circle 500W is not a good SMPS. Your SMPS is unable to take the load of your PC. You should change your SMPS to either Corsair VS450 or Cooler Master Thunder 450W.
Hi sorry to disturb u again. My friend went to the shop frm where he purchased that circle smps and they asked him to keep the cpu their. The shopkeeper engineer is claiming that they tested the cpu by playing games for hours but nothing hapenned. Now friend has returned how with cpu and againis facing same problem while playing games pc restarts as soon as he starts any game. For safer side we did gpu stress test and during the test pc didnt restart. But as soon as we play any games pc restarts. Dont know where the problem is. Please note that we have upgraded processor mobo gpu and psu but using the old cabinet that we used for dual core processor h61 mobo 220w intex psu and gt610 graphic card. Can this be the cause of restart.
Hello Pratik. First thing is, do not believe any word from these shopkeepers. They just know how to fool the innocent customers. Secondly when you play any demanding game, not only the graphics card but cpu, ram and hard disk are also stressed to their limits. I am pretty sure that this problem is due to smps only. Also please tell me which games do you run on this computer?
We run games like sleeping dogs prototype 2 assassins creed etc. And from the discription that the shopkeeper gabe about games present in my cpu they we thought they really must have tested it

For your old P4 PC get Cooler Master CM 350 Plus, for core i-3 PC get Corsair VS450 and for old PC you can use any 300-400W SMPS.

A more better option than Cooler Master CM 350 plus but cheaper then VS450 is Corsair VS350 which will cost you at around Rs. 1900/-.
I have a three year old Core 2 Duo System with motherboard Simtronics G41, processor 2.93 ghz Intel, Ram 8gb, 1gb Graphic Card, two sata harddisk, 320Gb and 1000gb, DVd writer and SMPS Intex 450Watt. Will you suggest me, wether the current smps is fine or the SMPS need to be upgrad.
Kindly note that I have added Graphic Card & 1Tgb harddisk two month ago. Till this CPU has never shown any problem, but after addition 1tgb harddisk sometimes disappear’s from the computer with again recognised by the system after reconecting the power & data cable and restarting the system.

You need to change your SMPS because Intex SMPS’s are very bad. You should get yourself Corsair VS450 or Cooler Master Thunder 450W.

PCI Graphics cards are obsolete nowadays and will be very difficult to find also. You will not be able to watch Full HD videos on your P2 PC because of the bottleneck due to CPU. For P-4 PC i want to know whether your motherboard has an AGP slot?, because you may be able to find an AGP Graphics card which can run your HD videos.

Hello sir your suggestion really worked and finaly tge shopkeeprs engineer agreed that there was a fault in the smps causing random shutdowns while playing games and has agreed to replace by tuesday. Now the thing is i am running my pc using the old smps of intexclasic 450 of 220v. My full configuration is i3 processor 500gb hdd h81 mobo 2x4gb ddr3 ram amd r7 250x graphic card. Now the thing is while playing games tempreture of cpu rises upto 56degree and graphic card upto 82 degree. On idle the temp is 42degree of graphic card and 42degree cpu. Is this normal or is this due to my old cabinet of intex causing overheating of my graphic card or is the low 220v smps causing pressure on system and graphic card leading to overheating. Also i have heard that 82 degree temp for amd r7 250x 2gb ddr5 graphic card is normal when running on full load. Is is true? Sir u have always ben helpful and hope u will help me on this soon.
It is normal for CPU and Graphics Card to reach temperature of 56 degree and 82 degree respectively when playing games. For more cooling or to decrease this temperature further, you can get yourself a good tall and wide cabinet that should be spacious and should have room for one intake fan at the front-bottom and at least one exhaust fan at the rear. iBall has some good collection of cabinets that are not expensive either. One last thing is to change this intex smps and get yourself the smps that i have recommended you earlier.
One more doubt! You have mentioned that 12 Vold rail should be min.30 Ah. for basic system.
You have advised me to go for Cooler Master 350 Plus. But CM 350 plus has only 23 AH from its dual rail.

For modern PC with good configuration it should be above 30A, but from the configuration that you have mentioned this P4 PC is not that power hungry and you should be fine with CM 350 SMPS. But if your budget allows you then you can go for higher SMPS like Corsair VS450 or similar for your peace of mind.

Recently my SMPS of i ball failed and i purchased a new CORSAIR CX 430 model for my desktop computer.
Now i have two problems with it
1)CPU CONNECTOR PIN on motherboard is 2×2 pin while corsair model provided only 2×4 cph connector pin
2)It is not getting fit in my i ball cabinet as my motherboard is micro atx type for which a ordered a new cabinet from flipkart

The 2×4 or 8 pin connector is detachable and splits into two 2×2 connectors. Also for the cabinet just get a good ATX cabinet.

For my P-4 there are 2 options. CM 350 plus suggested by you OR Antec BP300/400.
CM plus has 13+10 =23 Ah.
Antec 300 has 18+18=36 Ah
Antec 400 has 18+17=35Ah.
Which is most compatible Antec or CM Plus

You should change your iBall PSU as soon as possible because it is a very low quality inferior PSU and can cause system instability and damage to your components. You should get yourself Corsair VS450 SMPS for safety and proper functioning of your computer. 50 to 60 degree is hot during normal usage. For CPU Cooler i would suggest you to get Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO Cooler. It will cost you a tad under Rs. 1800/-.

Some smps are having more than 30 Ah on single rail then is there any risk of melting wires by using single rail smps more than 30 ah?
Single Rail SMPS are better than Multiple Rail SMPS. Single Rail SMPS can handle more load at once as compared to power supplies with multiple rails. There is no risk of melting wires or anything using single rail with more than 30A.

Well a SMPS generally has nothing to do with CPU temperature, but a low quality SMPS does not provide the required power to the CPU and may reduce its performance.

It is just internal distribution of power in the motherboard. More phase means more power to your processor and thus more performance and overclocking potential. You will be fine with Corsair VS450 as it has nothing to with SMPS.

VIP 400R is just 280 Watt SMPS and may not be enough. Better go for VIP 400W Gold SMPS.

I am listing down the specs for your PC
CPU – i3 – 4150 / 3.5 GHz
RAM – 4GB is the maximum amount of RAM that you have for 32-bit OS, as you have said that you are not into gaming and heavy programming stuff so there is no need for you to install more RAM which is required in 64-bit OS. Go for 4 GB DDR3 Transcend RAM.
Hard Disk – 1 TB WD or Seagate (both are good)
For PC i recommend wired mouse and keyboard from Logitech
For SMPS/PSU – Corsair VS450
Cabinet – Full ATX cabinet that is spacious enough (according to your choice)

Go for Blue. They are the normal ones. Green ones are power saving and Eco-friendy model and they compromises a little bit on performance.

Might be a possibility. You can check this by fitting a friends or other SMPS. There are no good SMPS available in Rs. 1000 – 1200 range. The closest you can get is Corsair VS350 for just under Rs. 2000/-.
what about gsm pro 500 ??

Never for that gsm one. The fan is on the bottom not upper. If you have a full sized ATX cabinet then it will fit in.

It wont be any problem because it has decent current on 12V rail but to be more future proof you should go for Corsair VS450 as the price difference between the two is of only Rs. 200/-.

This problem is not related with your SMPS. Go to your BIOS settings and change the Fan RPM setting to Auto. For more details about your BIOS settings consult your motherboard manual.

You cannot repair the SMPS and do not try to get it done from anywhere because you will be risking your PC components. Get a new one always.
For HD capture card go for AverMedia Internal PCIe cards. You can look at their various models on their website. Do not but USB cards as they do not perform good and offers features as compared to Internal ones (PCI Express). One example is AVerMedia DarkCrystal HD Capture Pro.

Thanks Akshat for the reply. I bought this Cooler Master Thunder 500 as I am planning to add some more hardware. My cabinet still makes little noise, I think from CPU fan. How should I get rid of it? Replacing the CPU fan or cleaning the same? It is not very duty though! What all things to be kept in mind to replace CPU fan? Or any market CPU fan can do?
Try cleaning with a brush and vacuum cleaner. If it is still making noise then i would advise you to replace it with another cpu fan or you can get yourself a better aftermarket CPU Fan & Heatsink cooler from good brands like Cooler Master, Corsair, Deepcool. The first and foremost thing to keep in mind when getting a CPU Fan/heatsink is that it should be compatible with your CPU or Processor. Other things you can look for is pipe or tube design, fan size, heatsink size, copper usage (for better thermal conductivity). Also when changing a CPU cooler, do use a good thermal compound or paste i.e. from Cooler Master or Arctic Silver (Best one).
One last question, is having pure sine wave UPS must for Cooler Mater Thunder 500 SMPS that I am using? I have some iBall model UPS.

For CPU i would say either AMD A4 4000 3.2GHz (Rs. 2.7k) OR AMD A6-6400K Richland 4.1GHz (Rs. 5k) OR AMD A8-6600K 3.9 GHz (Rs. 8k). They are available and can be purchased online.
SSD – Samsung is the best but Transcend and Sandisk are cheaper and are OK.
SMPS – for SMPS i would advise you to get Corsair VS550

I am in a bit of confusion i tried to get A8-6600K from online when i select the processor and place the order i was sent the wrong processor twice the processor which i receieved was a A8-7600 instead of A8-6600K…I don’t know why it was done twice finally i was refunded the am confused which processor to go for as of now the only processors available are A10-6800K and A10-7850K can you suggest which processor i can go for….and as of now even A10-6800K is also becoming difficult to get…Could you help me with what processor should i go with or do you have any suggestions. In this situation you should go for A10-7850K as it has newer architecture, consumes less power and has a bit more performance than A10-6800K in games.

You should go for Cooler Master Thunder 600W to be on safer side as your system is quite good and will need more power. But if you really want pure performance and quality then i would personally recommend you to go for Antec VP550P SMPS. It will cost nearly the same as Cooler Master Thunder 600W.

In processor not much difference between i3 4150 and i 4160. For graphics card please specify your budget. If you want good future proof SMPS then go for Antec VP550P or Corsair VS550.

Yes you can use Corsair VS450 SMPS if you are not going to use a mid to high range graphics card. In 4k budget the best graphics card you can get is zotac nvidia 610 2GB synergy edition only.

1) a low end board has nothing to do with overheating. Overheating generally caused by improper air flow and improper voltages
2) under 4k i would suggest you to go for Zotac Nvidia GT 610 2GB DDR3 Synergy Edition
3) yes you can use the extension / splitter cables for both of your fans. It will not cause overheating and overloading if you have a good SMPS.
i think i made a wrong decision buying i5 4460 is only a 2-3% better than i3 4150 as i looked over benchmarks and everything there is not much value for the money after all , what do you think Sir? did i choose the wrong decision choosing i5 eventhough i had a very tight budget?
No you have made the right decision. i5 4460 is a true quad core processor with 4 cores whereas i3 4150 is a dual core (2 cores). i5 4460 will outshine the i3 in gaming and heavy cpu intensive tasks.

No i would not suggest any one of those. xpro and circle are very bad too. And i think VIP 400R Plus can handle the load of your system because you are not going with a heavy graphics card.

i have custom pc, i built it with i5 4440 and intel DB85FL 2TB WD 16Gb Corsair 1600MHz Ram and 1Gb Nvidia Graphics 24 ultras harp monitor, i replaced the PSu with Corsair VS650 recently.
The problem is that i found that some of the voltages are fluctuating during long hours, i installed intel voltage check application, the 12V is showing 12.09V and 5v is showing 5.39V and 3.3 is showing 3.39V. so these three are highlighted with red mark, then i returned my PSU to the seller.

Very informative / educative article on power basics (that sometimes gets overlooked) for our expensive PC configurations.
iBall (LPE223-400- I guess 400watt) fan stopped. It worked for 4 years on Core 2 Duo E7400 4gb / 500gb. (Yr. 2008-09 configuration)
The amp is 16A under 12V for this iBall.
The same machine has been now upgraded to configuration usual Core 2 Duo E7400 with DDR2 2gb x 4 = 8gb ram (2 are 800Mhz and 2 are 667Mhz) on a 1.5tb hard disk.
My repair guy installed Zebronics Economy Series Zeb-450W DSATA SMPS that has just 15A under 12V. Whenever config is 6gb ram (I remove 2gb from slot) the machine runs un-inturrepted but as soon as I add it back totalling 8gb (although just DDR2 and 800/667Mhz family) – the machine beeps and I get a memory-dumping blue screen for restart and this cycle keeps happening after every 20-30 minutes.
Do you think the problem is related to SMPS or something else. Should I look for higher amp-rated SMPS even for my DDR2 Core 2 Duo /8 gb / 1.5tb. pls. suggest.

Never use Zebronics SMPS and the one you are using has insanely low current under 12V rail. The RAM problem may be due to SMPS or due to other issues but i would strongly advise you to go for atleast Corsair VS450 SMPS if you care about your PC. again i come back to home assemble my pc again same error is happen now i found that somethink is wrong with SMPS .now next day i went to same technician he check but that time he conncetd with his smps and he tols that your drive is clash i tols him my drive will replace its on waranty please check my smps that he check my smps and say its fine but
i dont think so my smps is not working properly he check with the systeam his smps was working fine so please me suggest some solution what will be the problem ???

I would strongly advise you to change your SMPS. Intex power supplies are one of the worst you should avoid them at any cost. I would advise you to buy Corsair VS450 SMPS for your system.

Iam a frequent reader of your blog and it has been really helpfull to customize my own rig and of some friends. But the part of smps still confuses me.
What should I look in my system in order to decide which smps and of what power should I go for??
Mostly I consider totaling the need of every part like motherboard graphic card cpu etc. and then getting an smps providing more power then the total.
kindly help as it is the only thing that bugs me whenever I configure a new rig.
The main components to look for when getting a SMPS are: Type of Processor, Graphics Card model, Number of Hard disks and No. of Fans. After that you can figure out how much capacity do you need for your SMPS.
so the total of power needed by these components is what considers the smps i should get??
You don’t have to add the power of all the components because that would be a very big number, just you have to look for component that will consume or requires maximum power (for example graphics card) and based on that you have to make the decision. It does require experience also. If you are unsure about your SMPS requirement then you can ask me.

If you can afford it then Sine Wave UPS is the best because it provides real, clean and proper power. I think you should go for Sine Wave Inverter. Please tell me your budget so that i can recommend you the best product.

CM 350 PLUS is enough for your configuration. The backup time is not purely related on the Watts of SMPS but mainly on how much power your PC is consuming at that instant. If the load is high at particular time (because of gaming or heavy processing) then the backup time is bound to reduce.

It is an entry level PSU and it does not have Active PFC and any Certification, but it is enough for your system. Also it is not necessary for you getting another SMPS unless you are adding a mid-range graphics card or couple of extra hard disks. Buy if you want to upgrade your SMPS then go for Corsair VS450 or Antec BP450PS. You power consumption is well under 300W (excluding monitor and printers). Also please specify your budget for UPS.

BI850SINE + 100AH battery can give you around 5 – 7 hours of backup depending upon the load.
Technically speaking an inverter is a circuit that converts DC to AC and a UPS is a complete device that consist of a (inverter+battery). One more difference is that UPS has very fast switching time but there is a bit of lag of 1 or 2 seconds in inverter that causes electronics devices and computers to restart.
BI850SINE is a UPS and it can be used with computers and I have not heard any issues of it with computers. For these terms i must advise you to refer Wikipedia as it is not possible to explain them in detail here but i can give you some hints. AH refers to battery backup, VA and Watts are related to power and load. And I have already recommend you the best UPS for your needs previously i.e BI850SINE + 100AH battery.

The formula for calculate approximate backup time is Battery AH x Volt / Load (in watts). In you case for 600 Watts it comes out to be 2 hours approximate. The protection features in UPS and Inverter can be same and it depends on the model and price. Your last questions is confusing “30 mins on 600 Watts Load and 1 hour on 600 Watts load”. You have specified the same backup time. Also please tell me your budget.

I don’t think there is any Home UPS that can give you 1 hour backup for 600W load. Either you have to go for more expensive online UPS or use an inverter.

I have fit it into my old iball cabinet which has the inbuilt ‘Quantum’ SMPS (no idea of its DC ratings) with 2 SATA connectors.
One of the major reasons I wanted to change it is because now I need 4 SATA connectors. Also after reading your blog spot, I realised I might end up in a bad position if I continue with this SMPS (even though fortunately it has worked for around 7 years flawlessly!)
However, I have already spent a fortune on all this and would like to do with a not-quite-expensive-but-still-safe SMPS. It would be great if you could suggest me ‘the minimum’ that will work with this and ‘the ideal’ that I could have with this.

In my cabinet I have cut through the upper part of the cup in a square shape and I have kept the smps fan upwards so that it will directly get air from out side did I do something right because I thought it would increase the air ventilation in the pc and the air would go only to the motherboard and other components instead of all the air being sucked by the smps , the smps would get air directly from outside is it right do you want to see the image. I think I am the only one in the world to do this mod of the cup cabinet

Frankly tomshardware is not very useful for Indian users as they advise too big and most of the things are not available in India. RX 480 is a pretty powerful card you will require a good 500 – 550W SMPS for it. Here is suggest not to go with Corsair VS series and get Antec VP550P SMPS. It is a high quality SMPS and you don’t have to worry even if you add or upgrade couple of components in the future. The PSU you are using is very under-powered for your PC. It has only 27A on 12V rail which is too low for your specs. Also these iBall power supplies are very poor in quality and you must always avoid them. I am very much sure that your problem is related to PSU. sir, i used android emulator (bluestack and sometime nox player, not at a same time). sir when i stat pc, smps fan make lot of noice till windows home screen appear it happen every time,
and second when i am using android emulator and google chrome, my pc freese or stop responding for 4-5minutes and system crash sometime.
so sir please suggest me good smps for pc. and tell me what i have to make changes to solve this problem??
is i increase ram or make anything else?? please suggest me.

I have now 2gb strontium ram 1333 mhz , 500 gb hdisk and im planning to purchase 2*4gb corsair valuselect ram from my friend and one gpu which may be Gigabyte GeForce GV-N710D3-2GL 2GB PCI-Express Graphics Card (Black) or zotac zeforce 550ti , im having the VIP 400r plus 450 watt smps . Will the smps able to handle the gpu and ram ? I have purchased the smps recently after your recommendation 🙂

VIP 400R Plus is a 310 Watt SMPS and not 450W. Gigabyte GeForce GV-N710D3-2GL can work with this SMPS but for Geforce GTX 550 Ti you to go for good 400W or higher SMPS (I recommend Corsair VS450). The RAM will work fine.

It is a low end graphics card and can only run older games on medium settings.

In this range the best you can get is Zotac GeForce GT 710 2GB DDR3. If you can extend your budget to 5k then you can get a much better card which is Zotac GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5.

I have got a problem. The computer boots with Windows 7 and after some time we get a white screen and we cannot do anything but switch the system off. My computer tech says that there is a problem with the ram slot. I took it to the Gigabyte service centre since the board is under warranty and they said that there is nothing wrong . They tested it using some benchmark test software. What should I do?

I am building a new PC and I have purchased Cooler master mwe 450 watt smps. But this smps is leaking the current. when i touch its metalic part or screw, i can fill the currrent. when i install this smps in cabinet, i get electric current in all metalic part and port except cabinet body.
Is this grounding fault or my smps is also faulty? kindly help me in this regard, I am not getting proper answer anywhere.
It is definitely the ground or earth fault in the wiring. Get it checked by an electrician.

We bought two i3 desktops with 8GB RAM & 1TB HDD (assembled) just last month, and there have been 3 incidents of the SMPS getting fried. Zebronics SMPS came in-built with the CPU.

My Issue:
I play only one game DOTA 2 – Hardcore gamer 24X7 at low settings
I want to play DOTA 2 at High Settings minimum 60 FPS.
I play no other game other than DOTA 2
Right now I cannot afford a new gaming rig.
Leave alone playing at High Settings my computer just shuts down after 2 DOTA games. and tries restarting on it on and goes into some kind of cycle and does not start up.
I dont know if i overworked the comp playing 24X7..there is also lot of dust inside the game.
I have somehow managed to save some money and ordered the below things:
1. Corsair VS450 450-Watt Power Supply
2. ZOTAC GeForce GT 710 1GB DDR3 PCI-E2.0 DL-DVI VGA HDMI Passive Cooled Single Slot Low Profile Graphics Card (ZT-71301-20L)
3. And am planning to buy a Corsair Carbide Series CC-9011050-WW Mid-Tower Steel Gaming Case with Red LED (Black)
So that i can at least start Playing DOTA 2 again.

1. Is the above a good idea to get my DOTA 2 gaming back on track
2. Ultimately what specification computer do you suggest so that I can get to play DOTA 2 at max setting with 60 FPS

Hello,
GeForce GT 710 is an entry level graphics card not meant for gaming. However you may be able to play Dota 2 on it at high settings at around 30 FPS only. For budget gaming or DOTA 2 @ 60FPS I would recommend at least GT 730 (384 CUDA Cores version).

First of all motherboards do not have any wattage specifications. Also, you need to change your SMPS as this one is not of good quality and has only 24A current on 12V rail. I suggest you to go for Corsair VS450 SMPS.

my system is fx 6300 ram hynix 1600 4gb graphics 7750 smps clarian 550 js-620 hard disk two 1tb and 2tb and ups intex 600va this sys work fine with no problem but when i upgrade it with gtx 660 graphics card after install my clarian dead in three days of use then i use corsair vs 650 this is also dead in three days suddenly i dont understand why this happen is this ups problem or something else i search on net my sys all require 430 watt and my ups output 360 watt . is this my ups is culprit because it doesnt beep that is overload and when loading game and line cut it is shutdown. i just change it with new battery.

I take a 1kv ups from my friend and want tojust checked install with foxin 450 watt smps this also dead in 3days. Without loading game all smps just fine for days but when I play game after two or three days it suddenly shut down and not start suppose all three smps were local but corsair vs 650 is the good smps. Well, the official recommendation for GTX 780 is 600W but a good 550W SMPS would do too. I suggest you to go for Corsair VS550.

This is the 3rd to 4th time i’m facing problems with my pc . I am facing problems like overheating in the smps port which is leading to melting in my power cable and smps port. I fear that it might lead to short circuit in my house . Moreover I’m facing noise from the fan unit and the computer has to be re booted multiple times in order to boot it the first time. All my pc parts are over 5 years old and i do not have an ups in it. Plz suggest the lowest financial method to use my pc again . During this lockdown all my studies are based on my pc .
