Earlier I have written many articles in this blog on finding a good SMPS / Power Supply for your PC, and also listing some good brands of them. But here I will tell you about the brands of SMPS / Power Supplies that you should avoid completely, as SMPS is one of the most important component of your computer. It the one thing that runs your PC by providing power to your components i.e motherboard, cpu, ram etc.
Cheap and Local SMPS Brands
Why to Avoid Cheap or Local Branded SMPS?
Some very good reasons to avoid local and cheap quality power supplies.
Low Current on 12V Rail
The first and foremost reason to avoid cheap and local branded SMPS. It is because they have very small current on 12V rail, which is the most important rail of a SMPS. Usually they have less than 25A on 12V rail which is too low for a modern day PC. The current on the 12V rail of a good SMPS should be 25A or more. For a gaming PC with mid-range graphics card your 12V rail current should be 30A or more.
Inferior Quality of Components
The quality of components in these power supplies is very poor. These components include transformer, capacitors, resistors, rectifiers, filters, heatsinks, fan, wires etc. Lower quality components will ultimately lead to higher chance of getting damaged.
Unstable under Load
These cheap local power supplies are very unstable under load and if you are playing any demanding games or running some heavy application for few hours then it can lead to following cases:
a) Your SMPS can get burnt or damaged
b) Frequent Restarting of your Computer
c) One or more components can get damaged
Low Efficiency and Protection
These SMPS have very low efficiency of 50% – 60% regardless of what is printed on its label.
Damage to your Components
Low quality components and unstability of these SMPS’s poses high risk to your components (motherboard, graphics card, ram etc.) getting damaged or faulty.

I have intex smart 450 watts smps.
I am using it for 4 years but till date i have not faced any problem. I dont have graphics card and I am normal user. On reading this blog I undestand that my smps is not good.. Should i change it ?
P.S. I am not facing any problem and my computer runs perfectly.
Also tell which smps is better intex smart or Iball lpe 223-400
If you do not have a graphics card and your PC specs are not too big then you can continue to use that smps if it is working fine for you. And between Intex and iBall i would say both are bad and they are not worth buying if you love your PC.

I think it is 16A which is way too low for a 450W SMPS. I do not recommend this SMPS and you should get Corsair VS450 PSU.

I have confirmed from near by zebcare servive centre it is 20 amps with 3 year warranty with above model. my last smps zebronics zeb 400w which i got +3.3v 28v ,+5v 30v, +12v 20A , -12v 0.8A +5vsb 2A and now its dead after 8 years.

what about the Enter E500A 500W SMPS ,it is having a good voltage and a sufficient watts for a normal pc (not a gaming pc) but enough for a good normal pc it also has a minimum 20A and maximum 30A , these where the benefits but what are the drawbacks for which this smps is not considered good

For normal PC it can work but then i also i do not recommend these cheap local SMPS. It has 24A on 12V rail which is too low even for a 400W SMPS. 1. they can blow up anytime
2. harm other components
3. does not provide required power and clean power

I wanted to ask you that does one point matter for example for a decent and good computer needs a minimum of a 25A but what if the smps is having 24A , then would it be a big problem , would it cause a lot of damage or it would cause a serious problem because i do not have a pc with high specs or would one point would not make a lot of difference

Well there is marginal difference of 1A between 24A and 25A SMPS and it should not be any problem if you use a 24A SMPS for your PC provided that your System configuration is average. But at the end Brand & Quality of SMPS does matter and there is a considerable amount of difference between current (same current) of branded smps as compared to current of local one. The damage happens more likely when you stress your SMPS and in most cases the SMPS will burn out. If you have any more doubts then feel free to ask.

But most of the smps have a system that does not allow the smps to get burnt , even some of the local branded smps have this feature that if the the smps is overloaded then instead of getting burnt it will shut down the computer in order to not to prevent any further damage to the computer. Even i had a local branded 450 watts smps known as “supercomp” it worked for one and a half year and it used to shut down automatically after five minutes in order not to prevent any damage to the computer afterwards i checked in the bios and it showed that it running shot on 3.3 voltage in red color because it had only 15A on the 3.3v rail so the problem of smps getting burnt doesn’t arrive only but the only the thing i was worried about during the test of 3.3v was that the processor temperature reached up to 74.5 degree Celsius so i was worried can you please tell me why the processor is reaching to 74.5 degree Celsius is it because of the low 3.3v.

Well even if the local branded SMPS have OPV / OCP then also i do not trust its effectiveness. I myself had many bitter experiences in the past and also seen others too burning their PSUs. The 3.3v is in red color is because your SMPS 3.3v rail is not providing the accurate 3.3 voltage. It may be too low or it can be too high. The current on your 3.3v rail is OK but may be the rail is not working good. And for your processor getting hot i don’t think it is related to your 3.3v current. Their might be other factors involved. Have you overclocked your processor and when it is reaching 74.5 degree? Whats id the idle temperature ? Also tell me your processor model.

You guessed it right i am running on a pentium processor i forgot the model right now but my processor runs on 1.80ghz and it does not have intel vtx technology and yes i had overclocked my processor to 2.44ghz but after some time it used to restart the computer a rectified the problem and made it to normal , but the temeprature is not taking name to drop down at all i have asus p5kpl am/ps motherboard with 4gb 667mhz ddr2 ram a 500gb hard disk and windows 10 pro x64 bit which i had activated it for free using kmspico.

To reduce your processor temperature i would advise to get an aftermarket cooler and install it using a good branded thermal paste. Read these:

There are no specifically made coolers available for motherboards. You just have to find a ideal size fan and then place it on your motherboard chipset. The Deepcool fan you have mentioned is good.

How much is your budget for CPU Cooler?

Larger fans have lower RPM, quieter and higher efficiency as compared to cheaper higher RPM smaller fans. The item you have listed is only a cabinet fan. You need a branded CPU cooler that will cost you at around 2k. My recommendation is Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO Cooler.

At this price the best SMPS you can get is Corsair VS450. It is a 450W SMPS but it can candle 500W load.

I dont like corsair vs450 because it has only 16A on the 3.3 and +5v rail , whereas my old local branded smps had 15A on the 3.3v and 20A on the +5v rail there is hardly any difference between 15 to 16 Amps but a lot of difference between 16 to 20 Amps the reason my local branded smps died is because it had only a 15A on 3.3v rail as it showed is the bios and the smps you have recommended is just 16A so it will die within 4 to 5 months and i go to replace it with the waranty they will say that i have brought the wrong smps for my computer so i will not get my waranty also . I an searching for a smps with al least 20 to 22A on the 3.3v rail 25 to 26A on the 12v rail and 20 to 22A on the +5v rail is there any smps . I also wanted to know how much amps does the corsair VS550 have on the 12,3.3,+5v rails.

3.3v and 5 rails are used for ICs, transistors and smaller devices. They cannot cause your SMPS to fail as they do not put any kind of load on your SMPS. Corsair VS550 has 18A on both 3.3 and 5V rails. Still if you need more current on 3.3V and 5V rail the go for Cooler Master Thunder 500W.

First of all please change your SMPS to something better. I recommend you to get Corsair VS450. Zebronics SMPS are one of the worst power supplies around and you should never user them with graphics cards.

no graphics card are there in the system,
i purchased the full system in may 2013.
from last 2 months i am facing so much problem with my pc.
when i start playing games (mostly nfs hot persuit 2) it suddenly restarts,
some times it restarts and shows blue screen
and on blue screen it shows blue dump crash,
sometimes windows suddenly crashes
i reinstalled the window (i have window 7 ultimate 64 bit)
window 7 have inbuilt repair window system u already knows that sir,
but my pc is not repairing windows when i click on repair window it takes near about half hour but gives no response, it shows repairing windows and after some time it shows windows unable to repair.
but i re installed the windows but after one or 2 days stuck on same problem system crashes the windows, speed reduces to very low level,starts hanging after 5 to 10 minutes after starting the pc,some times it shows 0.00001 like errors on black screen
when i open folders it takes too much time to load
i am in so much trouble i dont know what type of problem i am facing and in which part of cpu has the problem

when i run these softwares
they shows caution on theirhome screen
there are 10 to 15 lines in which they showing different kinds of data’s of hdd, in these lines all are showing good but at 2 places it showing caution

Your CPU is alright and the problem is with the hard disk as it is showing caution. Download crystaldiskinfo from https://crystalmark.info/en/software/crystaldiskinfo/ and send me the screenshot of your HDD status. Also i suggest you to change your SMPS to a better one, preferably Corsair VS450. RAM can also be the culprit in addition to HDD and SMPS but first do what i have told you.

Your hard drive has bad sectors and i think it is causing the issue in the first place.

You can’t remove them if they are physical but you try running this command CHKDSK C: /F /R at command prompt for repair purpose.

I have a PC which has i5-6400 8gb DDR4 DVD drive 1tb 7.2k rpm Seagate HDD and GeForce GT 710. I have had problems with Circle 400W silent PSU. Please recommend a good one which is under 1000 RS I don’t have much money right now.
I don’t think there is any good SMPS under 1000 Rs.
I had an UMAX nPower 600W SMPS rated 30Amps on 12V rail and was mentioned to have 86% efficiency. Recently I have changed some overclocking settings on the motherboard accidentally and it’s 12V pin got burnt. Now it’s making some noise and want to replace it. That was a pretty good PSU that served me well for about 9 years.
I am looking for VIP 400R plus SMPS whic is rated 400W with a maximum power output of 310W. So does that mean the SMPS has an efficiency of 77.5%?. (400*77.5%=310)?.
It’s 12V rail is rated 20Amps only. The 5V and 3.3V rails have 25Amps each and 2Amps for 5V VSB.
I have also shortlisted another SMPS Clarion JM-PS-530. I think it’s a 450W psu with 24Amps on 12V rail.
The 5V rail has 30A and 3.3 V has got 22Amps and 3A for 5V VSB.
What’s the significance of 5V ,3.3V and 5V VSB rails. I have read that 5V VSB provides standby current while the PC is put to sleep.
What’s your opinion about the Clarion SMPS?
I am using a pretty old PC with a Q6600 CPU and a very basic 9400GT GPU with 2HDDs and 2 optical drives. The system is used for basic web browsing and watching movies.
There is no info about VIP 400R plus efficiency even on its official website. 5V & 3.3V rails are rarely used nowadays. 5VSB is the standby voltage to turn PC On and from sleep state, and it is always ON. I really don’t recommend Clarion SMPS as it looks very shady. Better to stick with branded ones only.

I think it is not enough for your specs, because you are running Q6600, 2HDDs and a discrete GPU. And yes 5V rail has role in powering USB because USB is 5V only.
My first PSU was an iBall LPE223-400. I believe the actual power of the SMPS is about 250W. Then I had only one HDD and a 8600GT graphic card. Even when playing some heavy games, the SMPS didn’t have any issues.
The SATA power cable of that SMPS was a bit loose. Whenever the SATA cable is simply touched, HDD got disconnected. Thats why I replaced that SMPS with Umax 600W.
Now I have one more HDD , a Hitachi 500GB and the GPU is changed from a 8600GT to a 9400GT. So, comparing with the 250W iBall, can the Artis 400R+ with effective power of 310W run the system with an additional HDD?.
How much is the peak power consumption of an HDD?
Artis 400R+ may work for you and i think max power consumption of a HDD is around 9 Watts.
Is the actual wattage of iBall PSU is 223W as mentioned in the model number LPE223-400?.
If so the 310W Artis 400R+ would be more than enough for me.
The efficiency of Artis 400R+ is shown as equal to or greater than 75% in the box.
The math that I mentioned earlier is closer to that 400*77.5%=310.
If that math is correct and the actual power of 400W rated iBall is 223 , then it’s efficiency would be a poor 55.75% (400*55.75%=223)
You are right about this crappy iball PSU but Artis 400R+ has only 20A on its 12V rail.
I Ball only have 17A on 12V and it ran without any problem for me. I don’t know if there were any problems that I was unaware of.
I have mentioned earlier about a brand called Clarion. That’s a really old company known for their audio systems. The company went broke long ago and and now the brand is back, maybe just the brand name.
They have a model JM-PS-530
which is a 450W one with 24Amps on 12V.
From their model number it seems it’s a 530W SMPS with an actual output of 450W. Do you have any idea about this company?. They also make some 600W or 800W SMPS or so which have some decent ratings on Amazon. I don’t want to spent much on a true power SMPS for this old system.
Also is there any place to buy a UMAX 600W SMPS?.
I don’t think this is the same brand. Frankly i don’t trust this brand and never heard of it (i am talking about SMPS). However, if you are on tight budget then you may try this 530W model at your own risk.
Alright, Finally I ordered 400R+.
Isn’t input current an important factor while considering a PSU?
The input current of my UMAX 600W SMPS is 3A and I believe it’s effective power is not less than 480W.
So it consumes just 3A of current to deliver around 480W. It has a rated efficiency of 86%. I think it can deliver more than 480W.
400 R+ consumes 5A input current to give out 310W
There is another PSU manfacturer called FSP group. It’s a Taiwanese company. They are also in US and Europe.They make some really good PSUs with 90+ efficiency.
My friend has got one with model number
FSP300-60HHN. It’s a 350W SMPS with an actual output of 300W. It’s input current is just 2.5A and 85+% efficiency. It’s 12V rail can provide 288W max
400R plus has a rated 240W @ 12V rail.
Input current does not matter. The main thing that matters is current on 12V Rail, and may be efficiency if you want to save some power. FSP is a good brand and their PSUs are of pretty high quality.
Is iball ZPS 290 or 281 ok for Home use , will it harm components,

Yes you can use it. The fan will remain in the down position if you are mounting it on the top of the case.

Yes you can use a 450W PSU.
Hello akshat sir , I brought Gigabyte p550b 80+bronze psu but only after two months of use the Smps is dead, Will it damage my other pc components, I’m bit worried and will I get a replacement from manufacture on warranty
It is highly unlikely because the Gigabyte P550B PSU comes with various protection features to protect the components connected to it.

Antec VP500PC – how is this one ?
I use 2 display together. One normal lg led monitor and the other one is s LG 32″ smart hd tv from hdmi port.
Mine is a old i3 desktop. Sometimes the TV goes dark and disconnected and i have to reconnect it by plugging out and in.
Is this a smps problem ?

Antec VP500PC is a pretty good SMPS. It seems like a driver or OS issue and nothing to do with the power supply.

I have Old model P4 intel mother board. Which is IDE type. Now i m supposed to replace the SMPS. Kindly advice right bran with model.

previous i am using iball pps 282 and system auto shutdown after every 3-4 hr
i am now using collermaster 450 smps
do you think i will face same issue again ?
note – i shutdown pc once or twice in 1 year
Maybe not but it would be better to shut down your PC once in a week.
after changing smps still pc suddenly shut down with little power flutuation
i change from iball to coolmaster
do you think i need to change smps again or this is because of smps

Power fluctuation can cause restarts and to avoid it I suggest getting a UPS. I suggest APC 600VA UPS.
