How to Find the Right Processor or CPU for your PC?
A CPU (Central Processing Unit) or Processor is the heart of a computer. It is the place where all the processing of Instructions and Computation takes place. We can also say that it is the most important component of your computer whether it is a desktop, laptop or a netbook. Here it must be noted that the word cpu and processor implies the same thing, so do not get confused between these two terms.
Processors have become very fast over the years. Also they have become smaller in size and also consumes less power for their operation. Processors come in different specifications and speeds that can difficult for customers to decide about which processor to get or which processor is right for their requirements or work. So here is a detailed buying guide on selecting a suitable processor for your PC.
Important Things to Look for in a CPU / Processor
Here are some of the very important things that you should keep in mind when choosing a processor for your PC (Personal Computer) / Desktop Computer.
Intel or AMD?
Intel and AMD are the two major processor / cpu manufacturers in the world. Intel is a bit more popular than AMD among the users because of their reliability, performance and trust. But AMD processors are also equally good and are a bit cheaper than their Intel counterparts. AMD offers very good value for money processors with decent performance.
AMD processors had some problem of overheating of their processors (high cpu temperature) in the past but this issue is not present anymore in its present generation of processors. Both these companies are very good in producing quality and performance cpu’s, so it is up to the personal preference of the user on which one to get.
Number of Cores
Present day processors come with multiple cores that makes them very efficient and they delivers better performance than the single core processors, which are not manufactured anymore. Cores are the computing or processing units of processor that processes a given set of instructions. These cores work in parallel to simplify and execute a complex task much faster. These CPU cores divides the processing load among themselves and executes instructions much faster than with processor having a single core with same clock speed.
Modern day Processors comes in Dual core, Quad core, Hexa core, Octa core and so on. More is the number of cores, the powerful and faster is the processor and greater is its multitasking ability. If you want a computer for normal office work, watching movies, internet and casual gaming then I would advise a Dual Core processor, but if you are a power user who runs heavy duty applications, demanding games then a Quad core or higher processor (having more cores) is what you need.
Speed / Clock Rate
Speed of a Processor, which is technically known as Clock Rate is measured in hertz (Hz). Present day processors are very fast and their speeds are found in Gigahertz (GHz). More speed generally means more performance but it is not true always, because a Quad core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz will perform far better than an average Dual Core Processor clocked at 3.0 GHz. The number of cores and newer technology matters more than just the speed of the processor. So keep this thing in mind when choosing a processor for your PC.
Cache
Cache is a very fast temporary storage memory which is used to speed up the processing of the CPU. It is the place in the processor where all those instructions are stored temporarily which are used frequently by the processor, so that they can be made available to the processor at blazing speed. Cache is a small high speed memory that is built-in the processor. The size of the cache varies from processor to processor. Present day processors have cache size ranging from 2 MB to 16 MB.
There can be many levels of cache memory like L1, L2, L3 depending upon the processor architecture, model and manufacturer. A processor with more cache will perform better, faster and offers greater multitasking ability. For normal day to day office work, internet and basic tasks a processor with 2 – 3 MB cache is enough, but if you run heavy duty applications and games then get yourself a processor having 4 MB or more cache.
Price
Price is not an important factor as you cannot get every feature in a specific price range, but if you are really on tight budget then I recommend AMD processors as they have very good performing processors in the lower price range.
Note: A good processor also needs a good motherboard for getting the maximum performance out of it. So below is guide on how to find a good motherboard for your PC.

I would advise you to format your PC and clean install Windows
when i play call of duty or some other big games with high graphics…..the game play is smoother but while loading the voices or videos played breaks.. but smaLL GAMES LIKE counter strike plays in slow motion…..
Also please update the drivers for your video card and sound.
Hi
I got E6600 4Mb cache 2.40ghz 1066mhz from my friend to check performance. can E8400 or E8500 or E8600 show major difference with this?
Actually now i can play with power dvd x264 files .but can’t play clearly 10bit colour x265 HEVC files
Thank You
E8400 is a better processor than E6600. Also E8400 has better overclocking potential.
Thank you for your quick reply.whats about E8400 vs E8500 vs E8600 three have same cache of 6mb and bus speed of 1333mhz differs only on clock speed as 3.0 3.16 3.33 ghz.
No point in getting E8500 as it has only 160 MHz lead over E8400 but E8600 has a decent lead of 330 MHz. So here E8600 is a winner.
price difference rs.100-150 between E8400 and E8500.So Is it worth going E8500
If difference is that low then go with the higher model
my motherboard supports E6600 , so my motherboard supports E8400 or E8500 or E8600 also?
Yes in most cases
http://www.nvidia.in/object/mcp_intel_cpu_support.html
in this list E8400 or in this series are missing.but they told these are tested processor in nvidia labs(i think it is not compatible list).
I got motherboard manual from chipset cd .From that they provide like this.
“Socket LGA775 for Intel Core 2 Quad/Core 2
Duo/Pentium Dual Core/Pentium D/Pentium
4/Celeron processors”
Sorry for asking again and again.have some hesitation thats why so may i go with E8400?Thank You
I cannot guarantee you without any official data. I think you should be fine.
Also thus bus speed matters since E6600 has 1066 mhz compare with E8400 1333Mhz(my motherboard supports upto 1333mhz)
Bus speed do matter in performance
After changing processor ,Windows 10 64 bit OS shows only old processor name in system properties ,Task manager,System information. But CPU z shows correct processor name .Earlier i read one of your article changing processor does not need os format .Is there any way to get OS shows correct processor rather OS format?
Try installing the motherboard chipset drivers
Try reinstalling chipset .Result negative.Anyway after changing to E8400 i am gonna format OS..Now i am using without thermal paste on E6600. Please Suggest me good thermal paste.
Now OS showing E6600. installed driver from cd and one from website and also installed hwmonitor don’t know which made it to show new processor name.
For good and affordable thermal paste go for Cooler Master V1 IC Value. You can buy it at amazon.in/Cooler-Master-Value-Thermal-Compound/dp/B007W7S4CU/?tag=aksha0b-21. For more information on thermal compound you can read https://www.akshatblog.com/how-to-find-a-good-thermal-paste-or-heatsink-compound/
will try it.Thank you
Now found. reinstalling chipset makes the os to provide correct processor.Thank you
official data? both are official i think one from nvidia website and other from my motherboard cd.do we need anything else to confirm?
E8400 is a LGA775 socket processor but it should be written clearly that the motherboard supports E8400 because i have had such experiences in past so i do not want that you end up wasting your money and time.
Oh ..ok ok. hoping for good.
Best of Luck. I have a gut feeling that it will run fine on your motherboard.
Thanks for ur confidence .Boldly gonna try .Lets see.
Hi
Still searching in local for processor meanwhile i found Q6600 online but it is used one
Intel® Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 (8M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) (used)vs Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E8500 3.16GHz 1333MHz 6MB(refurbished)
Which is better one?
Thank You
Q6600 is might be better in some multi-threaded applications but it is a relatively older processor model consumes more power, so it is better to go for E8500 as for now.
Yes q6600 consumes about 105w .Going to get E8500 .Thank You once again.
Hi
Got E8500.its working in windows 10 32bit (Also working on windows 7 64bit) but not on 64bit(windows 8.1 and 10) due to compareexchange128 error (cpu lacks CMPXCHG16b instruction set though it has NX,PAE,SSE2)
“this pc’s processor doesn’t support compareexchange128”.i having 4 gb RAM due to 32bit it would be usable at 3.1gb only .So lack of RAM can’t play hd videos?
Also i heard some chances of updating BIOS may works in clean install for windows 10 64bit.But i can’t find bios for my motherboard Zebronics N73 and Chipset NVidia nforce 610i.Is there any software that can be used to update my bios?
Is there any way to by pass Compareexchange128 error and install windows 10 64 bit?
Thank You
This is a issue of Windows 10 with older processors. Also 3.1 GB of RAM is sufficient enough for use. You can try Driver Booster to search your motherboard BIOS. You can read more about Driver Booster here https://www.akshatblog.com/easiest-way-to-update-your-pc-or-laptop-drivers/
3.1 gb ram does not provide needed performance on playing even x264 videos with e8500 .but with E6600 (3.9 usuable can play clearly x264 videos on win 10 64 bit).Is there any way to get 3.9 usable on win 10 32 bit?wonder how E2180 and E6600 comparatively older cpu supports win 10 64 bit (both have CMPXCHG16b instruction set)
No there is no way except installing 64-bit Windows OS. Yes it is quite interesting that much older processors E2180 and E6600 supports windows 10 64-bit.
Driver booster does not detect bios update.any software that checks for bios update?
Also is there any way to check whether processor supports cmpxchg16b instruction ?
processor list that is compatible with win 10 64 bit?like e2180 e6600
You can use CPU-Z to know all details about your CPU. Get it here http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
before buying new processor , have to check processor has compareexchange 128 or not .Also cpu z does not provide cmpxchg16b instruction details (i searched lot on this but cannot get thats why asking you).if i get any new cpu,it may also have the chance of lacking this instruction
Then use Coreinfo https://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/sysinternals/cc835722.aspx
also whats about bios update software?driver booster didn’t help ,it didn’t show about bios?
Then i think there is no BIOS update available for your motherboard. Also if you can’t find the BIOS on your motherboard manufacturer’s website they you won’t find it anywhere else.
And what is intel speedstep tech.Should it be enabled or disabled in bios settings?
Intel Speedstep is a power saving feature which dynamically increases or decreases the processor frequency (speed) depending on the requirements of the software, game, OS or application. Default it is enabled but you can turn it off if you are facing performance issues.
if we disable it ,it will provide full frequency all time right and also core temp may increase right?
yes
i already tried coreinfo it says about nx pae sse2 not about cmpxchg16b .AIDA64 engineer provide these details. Also i need about this details without having processor. like getting info through online by just saying model name of the processor E8400 like that to buy new one.
then just search this info on Google by stating the processor model you are getting.
That too i tried .only cpu world provides cmpxchg16b instruction details .but it provides information that even for E8500 has CMPXCHG16b instruction .
so it is not reliable.Anyway thank you for your help.i will look in local like i got E6600
Hmm. Feel free to contact me if you have any doubts.
Sure.Thank you once again for your support .
E8500 has VTx instruction but it is not shown in cpu z in my system.but when i searched for instruction set for e8500 online ,i got snapshot of cpuz of e8500 have vtx instruction shown in cpuz. this may be due to e8500 released after my motherboard bios made.so it may not recognise fully about this processor. Also E2180 and E6600 pretty old processor comparatively e8500 so my mobo recognise these processor fully. so updating bios can help me on this .what do you think am i correct?
Thank You
Yes it may happen. Also try running the E8500 on your friend’s motherboard (if possible) and then run CPU-Z
How much difference can e8500 (6MB,3.16ghz,1333Mhz) make over e6750(4Mb ,2.66ghz,1333mhz)?
may be 15% to 25%
Thank God. E8500 runs flawlessly after my BIOS update like magic. Also Now my Mobo supports upto 800mhz DDR2RAM(previous 667Mhz).Now x265 hd videos plays good.Thank you very much for your mental and technical support.
Great to know that
what is the difference between intel i3 4150 or Intel Core i3-6100. and which is the best?
i3 4150 is 4th generation (Haswell) core i3 series processors which are a bit old now whereas i3-6100 is the latest 6th generation processors (Skylake) and they have better performance, architecture and lower power consumption. i3-6100 is better.
and which mob suitable for i3-6100?
Asus H110M-K
which graphicscard handel “watchs dog” game is very well
you need at least GT 730
Sir,
What are the specifications needed a motherboard for upgrading a new processor…
Make sure the processor you are getting supports the motherboard socket.
Sir My Mercury CPU have AMD Athlon(tm) 7750 Dual-Core Processor 2.71GHz and RAM 2GB and 32 bit Operating System this is best for playing games ? sir ??
It is good for playing old games and not the latest high-end games.
And my Mercury CPU have NVIDIA GetForce 7025/NVIDIA nForce 630a card sir
This processor will good for playing GTA IV,V ? sir ??
It is ok but not the best.
And If have any way to play high end games on my old processor ? sir ??
You need to upgrade your whole PC for that.
What upgrade my whole PC sir ?? please tell clearly sir.
I mean to say that for playing latest high end games you need to upgrade your processor, ram and motherboard in addition to a good graphics card.
My CPU OS was Win 7 how i upgrade free Win 7 to Win 8 without losing datas and files for playing games sir
This will help http://www.gigabyte.in/WebPage/104/step-upgrade.html
Sir 1 month ago I was give my Mercury CPU to nearest service centre because my CPU was caused hard disk failure that was cured. My CPU’s previous os is win xp but this was coming win 7 os.
Win xp changed to Win7 only 1 month ago sir. My CPU was already upgraded ? sir ??
I mean better processor than the one you already have.
My processor is best for high end gaming ? sir ??
Frankly No it is not.
U say better processor
then why ?
why?
then why sir ?
because you need at least a quad core processor for high-end gaming.
my processor is better for playing GTA IV,V
Please do not repeat the same question again and again.
Vry Sorry sir for repeatedly question sir !
Sir iam using a Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20 ghz processor (9 years old). I wish to pgrade my processor. I heard that core 2 duo processors are now not supported by intel. shall i buy a core 2 duo E8600 From amazon but they mention that it is not new and is refurbished. what does it mean? buying it is a good idea? or which is the best processor from corre 2 duo series? my motherboard is zebronics.
You will not find any new core 2 duo processors because their production has stopped. Refurbished means it is a used processor and it has been treated to look new. It is better to test refurbished processor before buying it so buying online is not a good idea. E8600 is good processor in the core 2 duo series.
How can we test it sir?
At the hardware shop itself by putting it in the motherboard.
intel i3 6098p vs amd fx 6300 which one is better?
i3 6098p is better.
hi i’m planning to build a pc which processor would be better to buy i3 6098p or i3 6100?
i3 6100 is certainly better

Hello sir, I have desktop pc I buy a 2nd hand foxin motherboard, I have 2gb ram dual core processor, PlZ tell me can I use any internal hard disk with this, as WD 500gb or 1tb hard drive. Or this hard drive not supported with motherboard and processor,.
Please tell me your motherboard model.
Foxin g31
Yes you can use any internal hard disk with this without any issues.
Thanks sir for your valuable response, plz I want to ask one more question, I’m confused with hard disk that which I buy, WD 1tb internal blue hard disk or WD 1tb internal black hard disk, I use pc for self study as Photoshop, autocad, and tally, surfing browser and downloading software. PlZ suggest which I buy.
Go for the WD Blue 1TB as it is very reliable and offers good performance for the price. The black one is a bit faster but it heats up quite a lot and has bad reputation overall.
Thank you very much sir,u r very responsive, I respect you very much, thanks again for solving my problem and confusion
You are welcome.
Dear,
could you please suggest me Motherboard for the i3 8100 under 6000 with support processor Graphic.

Hello,
Motherboard -> Asus PRIME H310M-E
RAM -> Corsair Value / Vengeance
SMPS -> Corsair VS450
Hello Akshat,
When you think the prices of processors and gpu will be low again. Currently due to chip shortage most of the processors are out of stock or are sold at high prices
.
Maybe after 2022
